Here we go. The Sobremesa by Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust is medium to light bodied (for advanced smokers standards at least), well balanced and pleasant with abundant smoke. Perfect combustion and draw in the four cigars I smoked. Immediate very pleasant notes of earth, cocoa, chocolate, red fruit, some lather and most of all, salted caramel. A very unique combination and very noticeable from the start. Thankfully the pepper notes are not dominant in the Sobremesa unlike many non-Cuban cigars that compensate with spice a lack of taste.
Not harsh, the Sobremesa can be enjoyed during a mellow afternoon. As with most Nicaraguan tobaccos, they are “stinkers”. The smoke is a bit more intrusive or more dominant than average Dominicans or Cuban sticks so I suggest to smoke this one outside and in the presence of other smokers. I enjoyed the Sobremesa mostly with a stronger beer (no U.S. beers) or even a Spanish red preferably from Ribera del Duero. Impeccable build and combustion on all four Sobremesas I tested. Despite the relatively dry winter air here there have been no tears in the cape.
With the recent Cuban-China cigar crisis and the shameless price increases by Davidoff (now followed by AVO Uvezian…) it’s time to look into alternatives if you don’t want to fall victim to an artificially inflated cigar market. The truth is that too many non-Cubans are garbage. Starting with all those that boast eccentric packaging or extremely colourful marketing. But worst of all, are all those non-Cuban with traditional Cuban brands on them. Non-Cuban Partagas, H. Upmann, Rome & Julieta, COHIBA, etc…
VERDICT: The Sobremesa by Dunbarton is a very good cigar and certainly worth its price tag. A slow cigar to be enjoyed preferably for 90 minutes or more. Don’t be scared to relight since it won’t change its properties too much. As far as non-Cubans this stick is right up there with the best. If I had no access to Cubans (70% of my daily smoking) the Sobremesa would probably rate at 9 or even a 9.5 out of 10.
RATING: 8/10
CONCLUSION: A great replacement for the Davidoff Escurio. It’s a bit less tasty yet the aroma and notes are more interesting than the Escurio. that it will be replacing in my humidor from now on.
